O pastor animarum

Hildegard von Bingen

1:23

O pastor animarum is the shortest piece of the programme, a single sentence by Hildegard von Bingen, and it closes the concert like a whispered amen.

O shepherd of souls, and O first voice, through whom we were all created: now may it please you to set us free from our miseries and our weakness.

God is called a voice here, the first voice, the one through whom everything was made. For a singer there may be no dearer name for the divine, and no better place to end: one human voice, alone in the stone, answering the first voice with its last note.

The Words

O pastor animarum

O shepherd of souls

et o prima vox

and O first voice,

per quam omnes creati sumus,

through whom we were all created,

nunc tibi, tibi placeat

now may it please you, please you,

ut digneris nos liberare

to deign to set us free

de miseriis et languoribus nostris.

from our miseries and our weakness.
